The Origin of Thai Coffee
Thai King Rama 9 had his own idea how to handle Thailand's heroin problem in the seventies. In contrast to the US, who started their “war on drugs” in south america with armed forces and napalm bombs against the farmers and their opium fields. The King of Thailand went to the opium farmers in the north himself and talked with them . He analysed their situation and created a complete new program as an alternative to opium farming. Coffee and macadamia nuts had been introduced as alternative crops, and the farmers got trained how to grow them. Members of the project got even land ownership and Thai citizenships because they has been mostly nomad hill tribes without any citizenship. This program marked the end of the drug problem in Thailand and the beginning of the Thai Coffee Culture.
50 years later Thai Coffee is a remarkable success story. The qualified growing of high quality arabica coffee plants , proper handling of coffee beans, roasting, packing, etc, has reached a level where Thai quality coffee actually has higher demand than supply.
We are happy that we found one of the really motivated coffee farmers who is already the second generation and has a strong focus on high quality products and reliable farming practice.
